It is like a "check engine" light on a gas car, or a malfunction indicator lamp MIL, lets you know there is a problem and there are stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes DTCs that can be read using a scanner tool over the OBDII diagnostic port to assist in troubleshooting. Some codes have fail-safe to allow operation, others have fail-safe that shuts the car down.
