So, I just got this notice from PTel. Looks like I need to find a new SIM card. Anybody have any suggestions?

Straight Talk, $500 a year (bought up front) can get them at Walmart. Mine runs on ATT and is great, no issues.

I wonder what would be required to bribe the devs into adding pre-heating and charger control. Although I'm not sure that the Mitsu has charger control from the can bus.

i was wondering about that today also, then looked it up on the schematic--indeed the on-board charger is on the CAN2 buss.

i want to figure out the CAN commands to turn on the defroster while plugged in to the EVSE. The remote obviously sends a signal that tells the car to do this, so it should be possible.

Here is how I did this for home use (not remote use) with a Intermatic CA3750 Z-wave device, and a VeraLite Home Controller, and a BeagleBone Black Single Board Computer.

I purchased a Intermatic CA3750 to shut off my electric car charger when the charge reaches a certain percentage (like 80%). Many thanks to the previous reviewers of the Intermatic CA3750 on Amazon.com for clarifying how to wire this unit up for electric water heaters; the wiring is the same for an electric car EVSE. I simply wrote a Python program to read the charging status and state of charge percentage from the OpenVehicles.com server. So when the car is charging the Python program watches to see when the car is charging and when the state of charge reaches say 80%; it then sends a Http request to my VeraLite Home Controller which sends a Z-wave signal to the CA3750 and shuts off the power to the car charging unit. The python program runs on a BeagleBone Black Single Board Computer Development Board I had laying around doing nothing. This set up works really nice and I already had all the parts except for the Intermatic CA3750. Plus I learned Python in a very short time and love its ease of use.

Very cool. Glad someone was able to make something like this work.

As for my SIM card, I switched to Ting, which has pretty reasonable rates (no traditional plans, just tiered rates for separate items such as data and messages). Plus, because I switched from PTel, I got a $75 credit on my account, which should last for 3-4 months.

With this setup there is also a safety factor built into the OpenEVSE I am using since it it set to only charge between the hours of 00:05 through 07:30. So I don't have to worry about the Intermatic CA3750 coming back on unexpectedly and charging the car more. If I want to charge during the day I just push the OpenEVSE button to charge now and the Python program will still shut it off at 80%.

Yes, I switched to Ting as well. However I did file a complaint against PTEL with the FTC and the state attorney generals office since I still had air time with PTEL which could not be used and will not be refunded. I won't do any good but at least it felt good to complain about it. :cool:
 
I've discovered that the OVMS uses very little data, I see usage logs of 8-15kB, and apparently it's being rounded to 0 on the billing system.

I'm using a Simyo prepaid sim, and apart from 2 SMS messages for 10 cents each, I still have 22,30 euro left. The data is billed by the kB for 15 euro cents per MB. So far, just 20 cents has been deducted after a week of use.
 
Jjlink, PTel was offering refunds on remaining account balances, but it was case-by-case. I'm not sure what happened to them, but they could've been a little more graceful on closing the company.

I had $77 left on my account, but didn't find out about the refund availability until it was too late. At least I got a $75 credit with Ting, so that pretty much made up for it. Something happened to my in-app notifications, so I've been using SMS, and that took care of some of the balance I was building up (no cost incurred with data usage). A side benefit is that I know exactly when my car finishes charging at night (I turn data off on my phone when not using it to save battery, so any in-app notifications come in with the time stamp that the phone gets them (which is when I turn data on in the morning).
 
Not sure yet if this affects Ting, but yet another hurdle for us OVMS users on AT&T or one of their MVNOs:

It doesn't appear that T-Mobile's GSM network is going away, so Ting and other T-Mobile MVNOs should keep working.

Hadn't been on this forum for a while, but wanted to point out that I've been using a FreedomPop Global SIM card for the past few months in my OVMS unit with no problems. It's a data only SIM card, so it won't send or receive SMS texts, but for getting the charge status, location, etc it works great. Best of all, the SIM is at most $10 to buy (usually on sale from $1-5), and has no further fees for the free 200MB/month level of service. Just be sure to CAREFULLY remove all of the "premium" features that are automatically turned on when you sign up for FreedomPop. It would be best to search online for detailed instructions on how to do this. Once you have it set up though, you never need to worry about paying for anything, you just get to check your charge status from anywhere.

If you already have a SIM in your OVMS unit, just reconfigure the APN to the FreedomPop settings, then drop in the new SIM. If you don't have your OVMS currently working, though, you may have to borrow a SIM, or else get a cheap H2O or other SIM just to do the initial setup.

i've searched all over the OVMS site and github, but can't seem to find the imiev specific source code for the OVMS--something like vehicle_imiev.c and .h maybe? Does anyone have the source or can direct me to it, i would like to take a look at which CAN ids are being used, etc.
 
There's an experimental build you download that has vehicles in development, including the i-MiEV. Switching between vehicles is handled by a parameter in the settings, specifically MI for us.

There's firmware 2.8.5 out there, but it doesn't show any MiEV specific changes.

I'm still running 2.6.5. The only issue I have is that app notifications stopped working.
 
Does anybody else that uses OVMS have issues with notifications? At first, they stopped working on my Android apps but continued working on iOS. Now, both apps and text notifications no longer work.
