Per DOT, we average 29 miles per day:

http://www.rita.dot.gov/bts/sites/rita.dot.gov.bts/files/subject_areas/national_household_travel_survey/daily_travel.html

I imagine there is a statistical curve on the site somewhere.

I'm assuming the 29 miles per day is an average year of travel divided by 365 - Probably so. Anyway, that means any long trips (vacations, long distance travel to visit relatives, etc) are actually skewing the results upwards a bit

29 miles per day is 10.500 per year, which is about correct for us, but about 2,000 of those miles on an average year are long trips out of state, which means our daily, 'around the local area' miles are actually less - 10,500 -2,000 = 8,500 / 365 = 23+ miles per day. I would assume this is more or less correct for most families . . . . your daily usage of the family car involves lots of trips, most of them much shorter than we realize

If you look at Figure 13 (Para. 6.2.1) of the link http://www.solarjourneyusa.com/HowFarWeDrive_v1.3.pdf most people will be shocked to realize just how low that distance really is, based on a sample of 748,918 trips in the 2009 survey. The i-MiEV is eminently suited for most people's trips, and it just takes a little forethought to juggle the typical family's cars for outlying situations. Sadly, convincing the innumerate populace is proving to be challenging, not to mention the difficulties of charging in multi-use dwellings.
