This is the Eaton charging dock that Best Buy will be carrying, ostensibly for the Mitsubishi i but I expect all-comers will be able to buy them at (or below) the MSRP of $700. Although this picture shows a stainless steel pedestal, you don't actually get that in the box. You just the standard unit with J1772 (no word on whether you'll get a choice of cord length) and cord storage hook.

Chad Bell (one of the managers in charge of the program) from Best Buy sent me this email in response to your post:

Rick,
I can say that we should have chargers available soon but the cost is not $700.00. Not sure on where that data came from but it’s not what we are seeing. As soon as we have them set up in the system I can let you know.

Huh. $700 was the number given to me at the press preview event for the i. It came straight from a Mitsubishi marketing guy.

You can see that Bengt Halvorson from High Gear Media, who was at the same event, but on a different rotation from the one I was on (so he would have heard this same number on an entirely different day to me), is quoting the same thing in his piece for Green Car Reports:

http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1067070_dc-quick-charging-mitsubishi-says-you-can-do-it-every-day

.......including the Eaton home charger that's available, via Mitsubishi, at Best Buy, at a price of about $700 plus installation costs, which can vary widely.

Cool, I hope you're right, and it ends up being around $700, which would be competitive with other chargers. I sent Chad the new link you provided, so we'll see what he says.

Since I'm in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii, outside of the Best Buy service area, I will have to buy the Eaton charger individually and have my own electrician get the county permits, and do the installation, since Geek Squad won't fly over from Oahu to do it. I would prefer to stay with the Eaton charger if it's priced right, since the battery's warranty doesn't cover the use of other chargers, according to the Mitsubishi disclosure form I had to sign to get my car in production.

On the other hand, Best Buy and the Geek Squad don't really have their act together, and no one seems to know what to do with the handful of guys like me that live on outer islands outside their service area. They keep saying eventually they'll sell the Eaton charger directly to us, and we can take care of the installation. Hopefully they'll decide soon, since our cars are supposed to be here in December, and we'll have to jump like crazy to get our building permits and electrical work done so we can use a level 2 charger, and not have to use 110V to charge our new cars!

Oh, wait. If you're in HI...isn't everything more expensive for you as a matter of course, on account of having to freight it in?

Double check with Mitsubishi before buying other than the official unit - I hear rumors of verbiage in the warranty document for the battery pack requiring it (though Magnusun-Moss would probably preclude such).

Rick,

Have you any word from Best Buy since the info below? I'm quickly getting discouraged with no answers from dealership & other companies who should know things in regards to Electric Cars here in Hawai'i.

Aloha,

Sad to say, but just like all the other electric vehicle offerings out there now, they are clouded with unknown facts or secrecy or just lack of communication. The Mitsubishi i is no different...

Legrand Electric Vehicle Level 2 Charging Station

Model # L2EVSE16 Internet # 203013921 ($749.00 Home Depot)

Electric vehicles (EVs) are hitting the road in a big way, and Legrand/Pass and Seymour can help keep you ahead of the curve with a new line of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), commonly known as EV Chargers. With 20 different electric vehicles rolling out in the next few years, equipping buildings and homes with safe, user-friendly plug-in charging stations makes good sense, economically and environmentally. And because the chargers come from a manufacturer with a history of reliability, you can count on them being safe, easy to install, and code-compliant.

Compatible with all plug-in electric vehicles (SAE J1772 charge connector)
Status indicator lights alert users to readiness and faults
Supplies full charge in 3 - 6 hrs
24 ft. coiled cord for easy cord management
Weatherproof NEMA 3S rating allows for indoor or outdoor installation
Built-in Pass & Seymour GFCI protection with Self-Test feature
Detects lack of ground (Ground Continuity Monitoring)
Communication with vehicle confirms electrical connections prior to charging
Auto-reset allows charger to re-try after a minor electrical fault. This prevents lock out and low charge situations

It's official. The retail price of the Eaton L2 charger product code EVSEL216HNAW, is $1075. I just ordered mine, and it should ship Monday. Since I'm outside of the BestBuy service area, Eaton decided to sell to me directly. I think it's priced pretty competitively compared to the ones that Home Depot carries. Also, when I ordered the 'i', the disclosure form I had to sign said that to maintain a valid 8yr/100,000 mi warranty on the battery, you must use the Eaton charger.

All units that are compatible with all of the EVSE Standards and Recommended Practices, including SAE J1772, NEC 625, UL2231 and UL 2594 should maintain a valid 8yr/100,000 mi warranty on the battery.

True $1075 the price is not all that much worse than the HomeDepot or Lowes price for Level 2 charge stations. However I would have expected Mitsubishi to have made a better deal with Eaton/Bestbuy than they apparently did. Remember this is supposed to be the most affordable EV on the market.

Actually the disclosure says this: "This warranty does not cover damage to or failure of the Main Drive Lithium-Ion Battery Resulting or caused by:" Nine different items. One of which says "Charging your vehicle using incompatible and/or incorrect charging equipment.".

However charging using a non-Eaton EVSE will not void the warranty on your car. In the US we have the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act which is a United States federal law, (15 U.S.C. § 2301 et seq.). Enacted in 1975, it is the federal statute that governs warranties on consumer products. Among other things, It prevents manufacturers from denying warranty coverage from aftermarket upgrades. The only way they can deny a claim is to unequivocally prove that the charging station did damage to your car.

See the ""Tie-In Sales" Provisions" here:
http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus01-businesspersons-guide-federal-warranty-law#Magnuson-Moss

Besides I suspect most of us will be using Public & Private (work place) Level 2 charge stations when the car away from home (when they become available). My employer is looking into installing some next year.
