Dear iMiev drivers and aficionados,

I am a graduate student at UC Davis' Plug-in Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Research Center (http://phev.ucdavis.edu) .

In our research at the PH&EV center, we are currently studying the impact of „Connected Cars“ on the attractiveness of plug-in electric vehicle driving. The term „Connected Car“ refers to vehicles equipped with an Internet connection and mobile apps from the smartphone world to interact with their environment.

At the moment, we are investigating how these mobile apps and innovative connectivity concepts could improve consumer acceptance for plug-in electric vehicles in the future. To this aim, we are conducting a short online survey (approx. 10 minutes). It is open to everybody who is interested; however, we are particularly looking for EV drivers to answer our questions. In the survey, we will introduce you to four different connectivity concepts and apps and ask you a couple of questions about your respective opinion.

You could do our center a huge favor by participating in the survey via the following link:

https://www.soscisurvey.de/connectedpev/

(In case you are wondering about the ".de" URL: Our study is a joint effort between UC Davis’ Plug-In Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Research Center and RWTH Aachen University in Germany, and we are using a German online survey tool)

Furthermore, I would like to use the opportunity to ask you about your expectations towards mobile apps for EVs and encourage a discussion in this forum:

  • Which type of apps would you like to be able to use for your electric vehicle?
Which functionalities could improve consumer acceptance for EVs?

Best,
Jens :)

The i-MiEV isn't a "Connected Car" since it is not equipped with an Internet connection. The only smartphone apps available for the i-MiEV communicate with it via Bluetooth or a wire but with no Internet involvement. So i-MiEV drivers would have no "Connected Car" experience but could, I suppose, offer opinions on what they would like if they had a "Connected Car".

Thanks for your feedback! First and foremost, we are looking for drivers that are experienced with electric vehicles - based on their experience, we ask them to evaluate if the connectivity apps presented in our survey could be valuable for EV drivers. Not having any experience with "Connected Cars" does not pose an obstacle to taking our survey, so all i-MiEV drivers are invited to participate.

Alohart, there is also the OVMS (Open Vehicle Monitoring System). This is an open source replication of the Nissan LEAF's Carwings system. The module is installed in the car and connects via the OBD-2 port. The module relays information to a server where a smartphone app accesses information such as state of charge (SoC), range remaining, location, speed, temperature of the motor, controller, and battery, and at what voltage and amps the car is charging at.

As of now, there is no car control from the module yet. It only monitors the car.

I found this survey to be pretty good, especially compared to some of the inane ones in the past. I won't comment on its specifics, but appreciate the survey's providing a space to enter our opinions along the way.

Hey folks,

Thanks to everybody who has already taken our survey!

Just a quick reminder:

Our survey is running for another 24 hours. We've had over 250 participants so far and are quite content with the feedback. Whoever has 10 free minutes, you can still support us and take part till tomorrow, 6 pm EST. We are also looking for survey takers who are interested in purchasing an electric vehicle, but do not drive one yet.

Thanks,
Jens
