I guess I'm the 'other moderator'
I've removed probably a hundred fifty to two hundred or so 'spam' links and/or posts over the past 18 months. I have not 'banned' anyone and I can't recall someone I haven't banned coming back and posting more spam, though I guess it's possible one or more of them did and some other moderator caught the repeat offense and banned the offender . . . . maybe thinking it was their first offense?
Not every 'member' here is a 'contributor' and even our loyal membership make posts from time to time which do not 'contribute' - When someone posts 'Merry Christmas' and someone else says, 'Yes, I had one too' it's not really a 'contribution' in my book, but it's not something that needs to be flagged or moderated, IMO
If we ban everyone who posts a link to an outside commercial website, there would be few of us left - I know I've done it myself when I thought it might help someone with something they're looking for
Spammers, on the other hand primarily come here just to advertise unwanted products, services and such. I suspect many of them are paid to do so. Most of them don't pretend to be members or bother to make any other posts. I have as little tolerance for those guys as anyone but I personally don't see it as a reason to ban anyone, at least not for a first offense. If someone has made half a dozen posts and includes a link to some unwanted product or service in one of them, I'd be for deleting the link and/or the entire post, especially if it has little or nothing to do with the thread it's posted to. I would let the other posts be, at least until he/she proves the only reason they came around was to spam us
I guess the question is - Should we ban everyone for a first offense and delete everything they've ever posted to this forum, or, should we be a little more tolerant and do away with only the repeat offenders who by then have pretty much proven they are only here to spam us?
The Admin makes the rules - I'm happy with whatever his thinking on the subject is. Personally, I haven't seen much of a problem with repeat spammers. As I said, I've deleted hundreds of links or single posts, but banned no one so far and I have see few if any repeat offenders
