Re: AWD drivetrain from a JDM I.C.E. i

I'd be pleasantly surprised if that prototype wheel motor was actually obtanium. There's a lot of reasons that wheel motors haven't actually made it onto a production car since around the time Ferdinand Porsche drove 'em during WWI. Unsprung weight, bearing seals, vibration issues, constant flexing ...

Re: Tires

Yep, the base model 92 Civvys roll on lucky thirteens. I think that the TPMS would simply display a trouble light. Easy to ignore this superfluous feature if you know how to use a pressure gauge. ;) There are aftermarket valve stems that incorporate TPMS sensors, but I haven't researched one for thi...

Re: Level 1 EVSE options

Woo-hoo, thanks JoeS. Time for me to build that adaptor and run the SPX on 120V. I charge on a 20A 120V circuit at work, and this'll cut my recovery time nearly in half. :)

AWD drivetrain from a JDM I.C.E. i

I know that the petrol-powered i (I.C.E.= infernal combustion engine) is available as AWD in Japan, but haven't found any photos of the running gear. What I'm wondering, of course, is whether the front driveline could be transplanted to an iMiev and turned by a series DC motor on a second controller...

Re: Remote control issues

With my SPX EVSE, the contactor does indeed drop out and stop charging any time the remote is used for any function, but the SPX restarts within a couple of seconds. I'm sure it's the 'ready signal' from the car that is causing this, and I think that's one risk of the 'smart' or networked EVSE is th...

Re: Tires

Though our i cars have 15" wheels, the bolt pattern is ultra-common 4x100, and lotsa Mitsu kei cars in Japan have come with 12" wheels. It looks like the 13" rims on my '92 Civic would have plenty of clearance around the brakes. I've been meaning to get around to a test-fit and if the...

Re: Practical solutions for extending cold weather range

I agree that the heater is mediocre, which should've been a slam dunk in an EV, and I haven't completely figured out the remote preheat option. It seems to have a 'sweet spot' of around 15 minutes, and shut down in 30 minutes or so, after which the car cools down very quickly. When not playing with ...

Re: iMiev not selling well?

Yep, no feeding frenzies going on 'round here. The Seattle EV Assoc is the largest EAA chapter in the country, and quickly raked up a pile of Leafs, but so far my i is the only one. My dealer hasn't sold their second car yet. I tested the resale waters after deciding i'd prefer a ChaDeMo-equipped ca...

I'd call it an electronic resonant humming, something UFO-like, more modern than the Jetson's car, but never to be confused for infernal combution! My kids say it goes woo-woo-woo. :D
