Re: Onboard Charger (OBC) Failure - P1AFE

Those smokey-looking wires are just the sleeve that was placed around them for extra insulation (keeping them extra warm). Both the sleeve and wire were still flexible in the two chargers I’ve opened up, but looked the same as this.

100k mile brake report

I got an alignment this week, and as expected, I had 0.8 degrees of negative camber on both sides, explaining the tire wear I’ve observed. They also reported -0.24 toe on the left rear and +0.24 toe on the right rear. I hadn’t noticed the car crabbing sideways and that can’t be adjusted out, plus no...

Re: MCU 20A 450VDC fuse investigation

Okay, this is enough evidence of mechanical failure for me to put a pre-emptive fuse replacement on the maintenance schedule. My original lasted 80k miles, but a friend's only made it 45k. What lower mileages have the OBC fuses blown at? I'm thinking of a 40k interval (so am already halfway there on...

Re: Car Now Charging! (was Car Not Charging)

Congratulations and very impressive! I'm sure glad I kept a failed OBC on hand, to attempt the now 'cheap and simple' repair documented in that video. This community has reduced the repair cost from over $4000 at a dealer to $400 from a junkyard, and now down to $20 worth of parts. 8-)

Re: Is my battery dying ?

[quote="DBMandrake"] Did the fault code prevent the car driving or charging or was it only a warning ? [quote] The HV lamp was just a warning, no problem driving or restarting the car. Rupert's technique for lowering the battery via threaded M12 rods replacing four of the large mounting bo...

Re: MCU 20A 450VDC fuse investigation

Excellent work KiEV, thank you! The rigid mounting of this fuse could be another factor, with thermal cycling moving the end caps back and forth at a different rate than the element. As in my EV conversions, I used a Littelfuse KLK20 as a temporary replacement, and when mounted in spring clips, it n...

Re: Is my battery dying ?

Nice thread! My data to add won't be as pretty, but yesterday the HV warning lamp came on at the end of a drive that went from fully charged to one blinking bar and 12.5% SOC, no turtle, odometer 102,683 miles. The warning was due to code P1A4B, "Each Cell Voltage Difference". The highest ...

Re: iMiEV as workhorse

That GreenWorks inverter is only 300 W, so it won’t power either of your corded saws.

Re: iMiEV as workhorse

Bradley, I'd say go for it with your inverter and chainsaw. I've used MR BEAN as a mobile jumpbox for my big diesel truck many times, boosting dead lead batteries for long enough to melt the bad crimps on jumper cables, and then continuing with better cables for 30 minutes or so. I've also left the ...

Re: iMiEV as workhorse

I had approached both local dealers about getting their i-MiEV marketing displays when Mitsubishi allowed, and both came through with the green jellybeans! Both of them had failed 12V power supplies for the led lights, but that is a very easy replacement. And of course, the sign fits inside on our h...
